Site Prep & Delivery

To make delivery smooth and successful, it’s important to prepare your site in advance. This page explains access requirements, recommended shed bases, and answers to common questions about delivery, permits, and ordering.

Delivery Access Requirements

All of our sheds and products are delivered fully built. We do not sell kits and we do not build on site.

We deliver using a tilt-and-load tow truck, so clear and suitable access is essential. In most cases, we need to be able to back the truck into the area where the shed will be placed.

For an 8-foot-wide shed, we need a minimum access width of 10 feet. For a 10-foot-wide shed, we need a minimum access width of 12 feet.

Our truck and load can reach approximately 13 feet 9 inches in height. Overhanging branches should be trimmed before delivery to avoid delays and extra time on site.

The ground should be dry, firm, and reasonably level for safe access. If the ground is soft or wet, the truck may leave ruts or cause lawn damage during delivery. While we do our best to minimize impact, site conditions are the responsibility of the property owner.

Crane service may also be available in special situations at an additional cost.

Recommended Base Preparation

All of our products sit on skids made from pressure-treated wood, cedar, or hemlock that run the length of the structure. These skids keep the building off the ground and allow airflow underneath, which helps reduce moisture and rot.

The skids should sit on a level base with proper drainage. We recommend a crushed stone base using 3/4-inch or 5/8-inch stone, approximately 4 to 6 inches deep.

As a general rule, the base should be 2 feet larger than the structure in both length and width. For example, a 10-foot x 16-foot shed should sit on a 12-foot x 18-foot base.

This extra area helps manage roof runoff, improves drainage, and gives the finished installation a cleaner appearance.

Under the right conditions, smaller patio stones may also be used as a more economical base. Concrete pads are not usually necessary, although they can be used in some situations.

We do not provide site preparation services directly, but we may be able to refer you to a company that does.

FAQ

What is the largest shed I can put on my property without a building permit?

In many areas, up to 160 square feet, such as a 10 ft. x 16 ft. shed, may be allowed without a building permit. Municipal rules can vary, so always check local setback and zoning requirements before ordering. We can provide engineer documents if needed.

Do I need to stain my shed, and how often?

Yes. Our sheds are built from local pine and spruce, and staining helps protect the wood and extend its life. We recommend allowing the wood to dry for a few months after delivery before applying stain.

Can I buy directly from your lot, and how long does a custom build take?

Yes. We often have inventory on our sales lot, and some pre-built models may also be available seasonally.

How long does a custom build take?

Typical lead times are about 2 to 4 weeks in early spring and 4 to 8 weeks in late spring or early summer, depending on demand.

What payment methods do you accept?

For custom orders, we require a $1,000 deposit, with the balance due on delivery. We accept cash, cheques, and e-transfers. Financing is not currently available.

What makes Valley Sheds different?

Our sheds are built locally in Ontario by skilled Mennonite builders and designed for Ontario conditions. We encourage customers to compare materials, workmanship, durability, and code compliance when choosing a shed.

Do you have a price list?

Because there are many size, layout, window, door, and customization options, we do not publish a single fixed price list. If you visit our sales lot, many sheds have pricing and information inside. You can also email us the size and features you want, send a photo, or contact us for a quote.

Do you have other locations?

No. Our only location is 10511 Highway 7 in Carleton Place. The page also explains that this is a family-run business, with Kevin handling sales and scheduling and Jake helping with deliveries and levelling in partnership with A1 Towing Services.
